Celebrity Death News

JCM is sad to report that Davy Jones of The Monkees has passed away at the age of 66 due to a heart attack. Not many of you may know who he or The Monkees were so just think of JCM but in the 1960's. In all seriousness though "Valleri" by the Monkees is one of the purest pop songs ever recorded and I'm pretty sure that no one playing music in Detroit nowadays will ever craft something that will stand the test of time like that song. Just a heads up..

Blowout Photo Prevue Day 3-Wednesday

Here is todays Blowout Focus band. I think the Pre Party is tomorrow so start getting ready. Today's Focus band is Old Empire. I picked them because they have Empire in their name and nothing screams Empire like Blowout.

The Metro Times says-Like a Brit-invasion combo that’s swallowed handfuls of downers; band plays classic rock ’n’ roll, complete with “woo-ohh” backing vocals, but add a shots of darkness and despair. Bloody fantastic.

Is that you Callwood? Sounds like you.
Anywho Bryan Metro says- Looks like the McPoyle's started a band...

Springtime Approaching

Winter is almost past tense. Spring is about to be ushered in by the tradition of potholes, blooming flowers, Tigers single game tickets onsale, and JCM at the Detroit Music Awards. I have included a link below to log on and vote for your favorite artist, JCM of course. It can be kind of confusing as it is currently on "Phase 2" which is where people can vote on nominees to be selected to be nominees for the actual event in April. Trust me it all makes sense and is in your best interests. Now if you're thinking "Hey wait, I need credentials to register to vote! Oh noes!" don't worry. Just say you write for Motor City Rocks or Motor City Blog and they'll approve ya. Actually if you want to write for either of those two sites for realz they'll approve ya too. Approval ratings through the roof. Another sign of Spring! Oh here's that link: Metro Wins Again

Anywho, JCM is up for the usual awards this year along with a few newbies to keep things fresh.
Outstanding Electronic/Dance Artist/Group
Outstanding Electronic/Dance Recording
Outstanding Electronic/Dance Writer/Producer
Outstanding Country Instrumentalist
Outstanding Country Recording
Outstanding Country Vocalist

Crossing barriers, crossing dresses, we do it all.

Blowout Photo Prevue Day 2 Tuesday

Metro here again with today's (Tuesday's) Metro Times Blowout 2012 Focus Artist. I wanted to select Growwing Pains who named themselves after one of my favorite La Roux songs, but unfortunately the Metro Times webpage did not submit a photo of this act. There must be a reason why MT has chosen not to promote their own fest properly so I best just look away and go with something more accessible. Something like Water Cops!

Metro Times says "Cutesy alt-pop recalling the Breeders and Superchunk in a single sugary scoop."

Count me signed up! Looks like a real good time!
I need to take a break. Tune in tomorrow for the next single sugary scoops of shit Focus Artist. Who knows, it could be You!

Blowout Photo Prevue Day 1 Monday

Sorry this was supposed to go up yesterday but it didn't. Maybe I could get an internship with the Metro Times!
Anywho, in honor of the circlejerk that is Blowout I will be "featuring" a band that is due to play at Blowout at some point and include some info from their Metro Times dot com Blowout page. As I was perusing the lineup page I noticed that the majority of the acts I clicked on didn't even have photos. There must be some reason for this robust unprofessionalism and since I do not have my internship with Metro Times (yet!) I figured that I should just leave all hypothesizing alone and stick to acts that have photos. As you know with me, image is everything, the better you look the more you see, and there's nothing better than judging someone based on appearance without bothering to search out what they sound like because god knows none of these acts will ever see the light of a Best Buy because that's the only place I care to get my music at.

Anywho times two, here is Mondays Spotlight Blowout Artist (and I stress "artist"): Looking Up At Down.

Metro Times calls them, "Americana in that Gov't Mule sorta way."

If anyone can explain to me what the fuck that even means you will win my Blowout wristband from 2010. It probably won't get you in to Blowout 2012 (but probably will) but at least you can use it to stop the bleeding.

Bryan Metro's Mega-Blowout Lineup

Someone told me the other day that they're still doing Blowout (huh?). I didn't believe them because there was no schedule on the Blowout website as far as I could see and since Detroit is the major city equivalent of the Latin language. But those timely bastards at the Metro Times finally released the schedule a scant 1 week before the event (ha...event). They actually did a better job than usual including descriptions written by someone whose thesaurus only has two pages (and they only contain the words "quirky" "poppy" "riffola" and "poppy") along with photographs taken by that one person in your introductory high school photo class. Anywho, I copied and pasted the all star lineup and decided to break out the old word association. See you all there, but not really. Blowout is so Empire it hurts.

Performing at London's I'll Be Your Mirror festival in May

 on February 15, 2012 at 01:20 p.m.

The Make-Up Reunite for All Tomorrow's Parties
All Tomorrow's Parties has announced that 1990s post-punk soul rock band the Make-Up will reunite for the I'll Be Your Mirror festival in London, taking place May 25-27 at the Alexandra Palace.
Veterans of both Dischord and K, the band included former members of Nation of Ulysses, and created a distinct, scrappy gospel sound by fusing soul, punk, and garage. In recent years members of the band performed in Weird War and withTed Leo's band. Make-up frontman Ian Svenonius is currently playing in Chain and the Gang, who have released two albums on K since 2009.
