Sit And Spin

So I subsribe to about 10 different music mags.....1 being Spin.  A good national alternative to Rolling Stone (not subscribed to).  Spin is like the Subteranean to the Rolling Stone MTV/MTV2.  Each week my torrent list double in size after excising band names from the various articles.  Now many of those will be inevitable deleted but nonetheless it is a good source for "on the cusp" up and coming semi-national acts (Deastro).  I will say they did miss the boat this month with having MGMT on the cover.  MGMT was the feature in Interview last month, and their LP Oracular Spectacular has been out forever.  Granted it is a good cd, a bit hit or miss, but I don't believe it to be the new "psychedelica."  When I think "psychedelica," I think Jefferson Airplane, Velvet Underground, Dead Meadow, Black Angels, The Warlocks, Friends of Dennis Wilson, Brian Jonestown Massacre (new stuff).  Oracular Spectacular is a good amalgamation and cross-genre record and all in all a cool idea but has been given the wrong nomenclature.  It's ok, the article was good and even had a bit about each band that will be touring with / opening for MGMT....it just seems it is a bit late.  On a positive note, the spin 2 months ago with Beck on the cover was a great issue, mostly because of the expose on Crystal Castles, speaking of which, why aren't they coming through Detroit again?  I think they should come out with a new LP/EP soon to calm my fleeting attention span.  But I digress.  Don't dog Spin, like many things (especially in this city), it's better than the available alternatives.

Can you tell not much is going on today?

Also, what's the deal with Pitchfork?  It seems tough as shit to get an "in" there.

Finally, go download our special Halloween EP for free here.

CC isn't coming to Detroit because Detroit is over. Detroit is the industrial era equivalent of the Latin language: a dying city with little use in today's society, and local bloggers who try to manufacture a plastic scene attempting to recreate the late 90's and early '00's are no more than simple priests utilizing a dead language. Sarte baby. Sarte.

the crystal castles 'expose'?wasnt that like a sinlge paragraph talking about how BAD ASS that girl thinks she is and then 5 pages of fashion photography.WHOA SHE CUT THAT DUDES FACE! EXCITING but I guess thats a pretty fitting 'expose' for a band thats only reason for success is the young attractive singer.

Perhaps expose was the wrong word choice. But nonetheless, its always good that a band that "i like" which has been on the cusp of national attention / fame, finally gets it. Albeit, an article in spin isn't insta-fame, i like to see bands i like getting attention and grande coverage rather than wasted pages with the corporate stereotypical fallouboys, afis, my chemical romances, rappers, boybands. So I admit expose is the wrong adjective/noun but it's cool how the mtv2 subterranean bands that were playing the magic sticks and pike rooms the past two years are now in front of everyones' faces and hopefully breakthrough the mainstream.

The attractive young singer is not the reason for Crystal Castles' success. They didn't show their faces for the first 2 years of their existence. People only knew the photo with their heads down and some people assumed it was 2 guys until they released the photo with their faces covered by bricks and one of them was wearing a skirt.

I agree. I dug their music before I even knew what they looked like. I don't think it's a negative that the band happens to have a hot chick that us getting more attention for her antics/looks then the music. You have to remeber, though, that if it wasn't for the music, huge underground following, very rigorous toruing, and a new spin on the genres of thrash/electroclash/dance/techno/d&b, the singer would never have gotten any attention. It is a very interesting scenario to watch/read about though.
